Biography
Representative from Texas; born Lera Millard, August 3, 1900, in Nacogdoches, Tex.; attended Brenau College, Gainesville, Ga., and the University of Alabama; member of the Houston League of Women Voters; first woman elected to Congress from the State of Texas; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband, Albert Thomas, and served from March 26, 1966, until January 3, 1967; was not a candidate for renomination; special liaison for the Houston Chronicle to members of the armed services in Vietnam, 1968; was a resident of Nacogdoches, Tex., until her death there on July 23, 1993; interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.Courtesy of Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
